Breast Biopsies

When a mass or suspicious breast tissue is identified on a screening or diagnostic mammogram or breast ultrasound, a biopsy, or tissue sample, is sometimes necessary for laboratory tests which determine whether or not cancer is present.

Unlike earlier biopsy techniques, which required deep incisions and the removal
of significant amounts of tissue, modern procedures use detailed radiological images
to precisely locate the target tissue and accurately guide the biopsy instruments.
The result is a less invasive procedure that provides better results.

Advanced Medical Imaging uses two systems, each offering advantages in certain situations: sterotactic breast biopsies and ultrasound-guided breast biopsies. In both procedures, tissue samples are extracted through hollow needles, sometimes with a vacuum-assisted device, rather than through a surgical incision.
