Breast ultrasound is a way to view breast tissue using sound waves. Your doctor may request a breast ultrasound along with your diagnostic mammogram if there is, for instance, a new lump or suspicious area discovered on your clinical exam.
A breast ultrasound may be helpful in evaluating an area that may not show up on a mammogram, as there are certain things a mammogram cannot show. However, there are also things that a mammogram may show, such as calcifications or microcalcifica-tions, that a breast ultrasound will not.
Depending on each individual’s history and situation, a decision will be made as to whether breast ultrasound is a useful tool in diagnosis
