Internal organs and tissues are revealed with amazing clarity and detail with MRI,
which uses a strong magnetic field and high-frequency radio waves. MRI is a valuable aid in diagnosing a number of conditions, from cancer to cardiovascular disease to stroke to musculoskeletal disorders, as well as examining internal organs.
A “noninvasive” procedure—meaning nothing actually enters the body—MRI is a
simple process that requires you to lie on a table which positions your body under or inside the magnet for the scan. Advanced Medical Imaging utilizes the traditional
“tunnel” type scanner with a circular magnet that surrounds the patient, as well as an “open” MRI scanner with the magnet on a flat platform above the patient. The appro-priate MRI scanner is chosen for each procedure based on the clarity of images required, the part of the body to be scanned, the length of the scan, and the desires
of the doctor and the patient.
